China to ban single-use plastic bags and straws

2020-10-15

China's National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued the "Opinions on Further Strengthening the Treatment of Plastic Pollution", stipulating that by the end of 2020, non-degradable disposable plastic straws will be prohibited in the catering industry nationwide. However, the straws that come with the outer packaging of food such as milk and beverages are temporarily not prohibited.

It is proposed that starting from January 1 next year, non-degradable plastics will be prohibited in shopping malls, supermarkets, pharmacies, bookstores and other places in the built-up areas of China's municipalities, provincial capitals, and cities under separate planning, food and beverage delivery services, and various exhibition activities. Shopping bags, but roll-up bags, fresh-keeping bags and garbage bags are not forbidden.

In order to cope with the subsequent ban on paper straws for the catering industry, many businesses have begun to find ways to solve the problems caused by the ban on plastic straws, such as replacing plastic straws with paper straws and improving cup lids.

Some environmentally friendly bags, such as cloth bags, non-woven bags or paper bags, can be used to replace the use of non-degradable plastic shopping bags.

By reducing plastic products, use eco products as much as possible. Our environment will get better
